Senior Life in Kansas
Kansas residents over the age of 65 make up 12.9 percent of the total population. This is slightly above the national average of 12.4 percent. This number will grow in the coming years, as well as the need for assisted living and long term care in Kansas.
Economy:
Kansas' agricultural exports are livestock, wheat, soy, and corn. It's a so-called “Grain Belt” state. Kansas is lesser known for its oil production, but it's the 8th biggest oil producer in the United States, pumping out about 2.5 million barrels of crude per month--- it's also the 8th biggest natural gas producer. The state is home to major corporations like Spirit AeroSystems and and Sprint/Nextel, the former being Kansas's largest employer (its second biggest employer is the Fort Riley military base.)
Noteworthy:
Kansas boards of education were the defendants in two seminal court cases. The first was the famous Brown vs. the Board of Education school segregation case, the second came when the state Board voted to stop the teaching evolution in public schools. |
