Senior Life in Florida
Florida has a higher than average percentage of residents over the age of 65. As of the 2006 census, a whopping 16.8% of residents here are in this category, as compared to 12.4% for the national average. This is to be expected, as Florida is one of the most popular states among seniors and retirees due to the great climate, senior care options and assisted living facilities that the state has to offer. Naturally, the need for assisted living and long-term care has grown over the years along with this increase in the number of seniors living here.
Economy:
Florida is the fourth largest economy in the United States, and is also one of its most diverse. Tourism is a major economic engine, with Disney World, the Everglades, South Beach, the Keys and numerous other attractions drawing millions of visitors each year. Florida's agricultural output is also among the nation's highest, with citrus and livestock leading the pack. Florida is one of the few places where some of the more delicate fruits and vegetables like tomatoes can be grown year-round. Military and government are also major employers in Florida, thanks to its 24 military bases and the legendary Kennedy Space Center.
Noteworthy:
Florida has more than 1,200 golf courses, surpassing California for the most in the country by more than 300. |
