Nursing Homes

Nursing homes often get a bad rap as being places that older people go to die. The reality of senior nursing homes is quite different. Also known as skilled nursing facilities, a nursing home for seniors can meet many different needs, helping older people live full, healthy lives. Whether it’s recovery and rehabilitation from surgery or long term Alzheimer’s care , nursing homes provide services for seniors with a wide variety of needs.

A nursing home has a medical staff, including nurses and doctors. There is also physical, speech and occupational therapy available. Seniors nursing homes help residents with dressing, bathing, walking and providing meals. A stay at a nursing home is usually prescribed by a doctor and care is managed and coordinated between the facility and medical staff. Both short-term and long-terms stays are generally covered partially by Medicare if the facility is federally certified.

Some important things to look for in a nursing home are the number of skilled staff available on a regular basis, such as registered nurses, licensed practical nurses and doctors. While the majority of the day-to-day care of residents in most nursing homes falls to nursing assistants and aides, a good facility will have skilled staff making regular rounds and on call.

Another thing to consider is the ratio of nursing home residents to staff, at all levels of training. Having personnel like a nutritionist and a psychologist on staff helps elevate the type of care a resident will receive. Also, evaluate facilities based on the amenities and activities offered. While nursing home seniors have mobility and other limiting factors concerning their health, that doesn’t mean they should sit in a wheelchair and stare at the wall.

A high-quality nursing home will meet the physical, medical and emotional needs of its residents. Stimulating activity and social connections are an important part of staying healthy and enjoying life. A nursing home should have a caring, competent staff that helps its residents feel almost as comfortable as being home. Looking online at listings and information on a facility finding website can be a great way to begin this important search.
