Finding a Facility

The transition of moving an older loved one from home to a place that can help with day-to-day care can be a difficult one. Finding assisted living facilities is a dilemma families across the country face every day. Fortunately, there are services that can provide families with information and resources to make this important transition a little smoother.

Finding a facility starts with determining the needs of your senior adult loved one. Senior facilities are geared to help older adults with their daily care, but still allow them some autonomy and independence. Larger senior living facilities offer shared and private rooms, some even have apartment-like units. There are also smaller, more intimate care facilities, sometimes called board and care facilities , which provide daily care in a residential setting.

A senior living facility typically meets the needs of individuals who do not need skilled nursing around the clock. Some of the services provided by senior housing include providing meals, help with the daily routine of bathing and dressing, appropriate exercise and activities, monitoring medication, and assistance getting around. It’s important to understand that these are not medical facilities and have limited or no medical personnel on staff.

Once you determine what type of facility will help meet the needs of your loved one, the difficult part is finding just the right assisted living facility. Affordable senior living alternatives exist, but need to be researched and compared, facility to facility. While cost and insurance coverage are certainly factors to be considered, they vary widely from place to place.

This is where a service can help you navigate all choices and find the right assisted living facility for your loved one. Many services are available online and are a great resource for tips and advice. Most of these services are provided to the client for free and receive their fees from the facilities, not from you.

While this is certainly something you can do without the help of an online service, why go to all that extra work? The services provide you and your family with a comprehensive listing, an assessment of the long term cost and advice on how to make the transition easier for your whole family.
