Senior Sight and Hearing

One aspect of aging that can affect the overall quality of life is seniors hearing. Hearing loss can be a natural part of aging and one of the most common chronic conditions for the elderly. While there is little to be done to prevent this natural process, senior hearing loss can be addressed in other ways.

Not being able to hear the conversations going on around you can be frustrating for older adults. Constantly asking friends and family to repeat what they are saying is not fun for either side of the conversation. Phone conversations are next to impossible and navigating the everyday world of needing to hear what clerks, nurses and pharmacists are saying can even lead to dangerous misunderstandings.

Getting regular hearing checks can help slow down the process of hearing loss. Sometimes there are simple reasons for hearing loss like wax build-up in the ear or an infection. Even if the exact cause can’t be pinpointed, addressing the issue early can keep this chronic condition from getting worse. All too often senior hearing loss can result in feelings of depression and isolation, so even if prevention isn’t possible, other solutions are available.

Hearing aids for seniors have come a long way from the horn an older adults would hold up to their ears when someone wanted to speak to them. Now hearing aids can be unobtrusive and improve different levels of hearing loss. Some hearing aids simply amplify sounds and have pretty simple, inexpensive structures. Other hearing aids can be quite sophisticated and address specific types of hearing loss. While these models are expensive, they are worth the money. Medicare and private insurance plans can help defray the cost of hearing aids.

Seniors sight can be another area of concern. Like hearing loss, vision problems can be a natural part of the aging process. But also like hearing loss, regular screenings and early treatments can keep serious problems at bay. A safe home needs to have ample lighting for reading and getting around. Also, a healthy diet can help maintain good eyesight.
