Insurance for Seniors

Insuring Personal Property

Transitioning into an assisted living facility can be a bittersweet and even difficult experience, but just because your changing residences doesn't mean that your most cherished possessions should come into danger. Choosing the right possessions to take with you and insurance of personal property can help to protect you from this.

Before you move you need to decide how much space you will have and what you should bring with you. Remember, there are many items that may be very valuable to you but that you don't necessarily need on a daily basis. If you have relatives who might be able to heirlooms for you or help you access them at a storage facility, you might want to keep larger items like furniture, art or glassware off-site.

One of the disadvantages to most assisted living communities is that others may be access your room without your knowledge. Usually this will not be a problem as most communities and their residents have full confidence in the staff, but sometimes it's better to be safe than sorry. Smaller valuables like jewelry, documents or collectibles can be kept in locked boxes or a safe inside your room.

Recently senior citizens property insurance has become available to bring piece of mind to seniors who don't want to have to worry about anything getting damaged or stolen in their rooms. These policies can be purchased both on their own and as part of a family home property insurance or business property insurance plan. If you have family with such a policy, ask them if they can amend it to include your possessions at the assisted living facility.

There's no need to be particularly worried about the safety of your possessions just because you are no longer living alone. By carefully selecting what to bring and what to store, finding safe storage for your most valuable or cherished items, and purchasing insurance on those items, you can be confident in your new home.
