Insurance for Seniors

Auto Insurance

Finding a senior citizen car insurance policy can be extremely difficult if you are looking for the best rate. This is because most companies have decided that providing auto insurance for seniors is a risky proposition that they'd rather avoid unless they can get huge premiums on the policy. It's true that older Americans get into more accidents on average—drivers older than 70 have the second highest accident rate behind teenagers. But there are any number of factors ranging from poor eyesight to dementia that may be contributing factors in these accidents. Not all seniors suffer from these afflictions though, and many are very adept and responsible drivers who take great pride in their ability to drive safely at an advanced age. Unfortunately, even the best elderly drivers can expect to pay a little more for insurance.

So how do you go about finding a good price on senior citizen auto insurance? The first step is finding the right quotes. You should probably start with companies that specialize in senior's car insurance--- AAA and AARP both offer such plans, which carry with them a very good reputation. Purchasing through one of these organizations can save you hundreds of dollars a year in premiums.

You should also look into special instructional driving courses that aim to help older Americans keep their driving skills sharp and overcome disadvantages like near-sightedness or poor hearing. There are a variety of special tricks that seniors can use to keep these conditions from being dangerous to themselves or others on the road. In addition to helping you be a better driver, completing one of these course will often trigger a discount a senior citizen's car insurance. In some states that discount can be as high as 15 percent, all for completing a short class that usually costs less than $20 to $30. You should always check first with potential insurers to find out if they're will to offer a discount for completing one of these courses.

Use an insurance rate comparison website to find quotes and subtract any discounts from those rates.
